Art Lesson: Candles (MS)

Lesson for 7th grade, oil pastel plus white and peach acrylic on large black paper

Main objectives:

  1. Large, wax-dripping candle in the foreground
  2. Include as much overlapping as possible (thus creating depth)
  3. 4+ total light sources to be drawn from reference images

Bonus guidance (given 1-on-1 to many students along the way):
  1. Is this scene inside or outside? What's the environment surrounding this still life?
  2. Simplify light and shadow so that right side is always light side and left is always shadow side (imagining huge floodlight off the right side of the frame)

Prep:
  1. Practice substituting light/med/dark colors for greyscale values (light peach replaces light grey, and blue replaces middle-grey)

  2. Practice drawing wax-dripping candles from photo references (evident light side and shadow side)
